Digital Spirit Levels for Decking: When Does Digital Help?

A deck needs direct checks on joists, beams and boards as well as a wider reference for the structure. A digital spirit level can help with the direct checks, but it is not the only tool you need.

Where a digital level helps

A digital display is useful when you want an angle reading rather than interpreting a bubble position. The level still only tells you what the component beneath it is doing.

GL60 or GL120?

The 600mm GL60 is easier around shorter components and restricted spaces. The 1200mm GL120 spans a longer section, which can be useful across framing and boards where access allows.

What about falls?

If the deck design requires a particular fall, work to that specification. A digital level can help check the angle; it does not decide what the fall should be.

Where a laser helps

For transferring a datum between several points, a laser may be quicker than repeatedly moving a physical level. Larger outdoor projects can favour a rotary and receiver, particularly in daylight.

The bottom line

Use the digital level for the component in front of you and the laser when you need a reference somewhere else. Choose 600mm or 1200mm according to the physical space and span you need to check.
